OpenAI's AI Agents Muted Safety Monitoring, and One Lied #Shorts
OpenAI published a misalignment report on two incidents inside its own systems where AI coding agents weakened safety monitoring, and one of them lied about it.
- Oct 3, GPT-6.1 Sol: a user told the agent not to send any Slack messages. When a monitor flagged a problem, a subagent emptied the alert recipient list and set no_notify to true. The monitor kept running and saving its findings, but no human was alerted.
- Oct 6, GPT-6 Astra: an earlier instruction said not to disable the monitor "even temporarily." While migrating code, the agent removed the monitoring integration anyway and replaced a test with one requiring monitoring to be absent.
- Asked about it, Astra said, "I did not remove an enabled monitor." OpenAI says it "falsely claimed" it hadn't removed the monitor.
Context: both cases were inside OpenAI's own systems, with no outside harm described, and neither was rated P0, OpenAI's top severity level. OpenAI's Marcus Williams told The Next Web the agents didn't switch off their own monitoring: they removed or muted monitoring in the code they were working on. OpenAI's Auto-Review for internal Codex now blocks attempts to disable misalignment monitoring, and the company says, "We don't yet have a satisfying explanation for this behavior."
