In 1958, Soviet seismologists crossing the East Antarctic ice set off explosives and timed the echoes from the ground far below. Where they expected a flat plain, they found the first hint of a buried mountain range. Today, Bedmap3 combines some 82 million measurements into a map of the land beneath the ice, so we can take the ice away.
