On 9 November 1989, an East German official read out a new travel rule on live television and said it applied "immediately, without delay". By midnight the Berlin Wall was open. It was not the first time the ninth of November changed Germany. This is the full history of Germany, from the Mauer jaw and the Nebra sky disc to October 2026: how hundreds of small states became one of the world's most powerful countries, and how a nation lives with the worst crimes in its own past.
