The Roman Empire did not end in 476. It ended on the morning of 29 May 1453, on the walls of Constantinople, nearly a thousand years after Rome is supposed to have fallen. This is the full history, from huts beside the Tiber to the last Roman emperor: Hannibal and Cannae, Caesar and Augustus, roads and concrete, Pompeii, the crisis of the third century, Constantine's new Rome, and the Romans of the east who carried the empire on for another thousand years.
